Description
What does the new Kentucky House and Senate redistricting mean for Hopkins County?
- The Chamber will hold a round-table discussion led by Chamber Member Will Cox, Law Office of William M Cox Jr PLLC to help explain the changes and its impact on Hopkins County.
- The advocacy roundtable will take place on Thursday, January 20 at 2 p.m. at the Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce, 15 E. Center St., Madisonville, KY 42431. This event is free; however, an RSVP is required to office@hopkinschamber.com or by calling 270-821-3435.
Background
The legislature is constitutionally required to rebalance the district maps based on most recent census data, and legislative leaders have noted there have been dramatic population shifts over the last 10 years in Kentucky.
All of the redistricting plans now move to the governor’s desk, where the bills will either receive his signature or veto. If he vetoes the plans, the legislature will have the opportunity to override those vetoes. Following that, there is the possibility for court challenges. Because of these changes and its impact on the 2022 elections, prospective candidates have until January 25 to file.
